Music video spot for city event
THE World Gymnastics Championships that were held in Glasgow last year have won a starring role in a new song by Katy Perry.
She has recorded Rise, the official Rio 2016 Olympic Games soundtrack for American broadcaster NBC.
It features a montage of outstanding sporting moments including Japan’s K hei Uchimura in action at the Hydro.
Uchimura, who won his sixth men’s all-round gold in Glasgow, famously picked himself up from a fall from the high bar during the men’s team final to help Japan end a 37-year wait for gold in the event.
The moment is captured in Katy Perry’s video, which has already had close to 18 million views on YouTube, despite only being released nine days ago.
More than 590 of the world’s top gymnasts from 87 nations travelled to the city for the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships, which were watched by almost 80,000 spectators over 10 days.
Federation Internationale de Gymnastique president Bruno Grandi said the championships had been “wonderful in every aspect”.
He added: “For this we owe a lot to the Glasgow 2015 organising committee.”
City council leader Frank McAveety said: “The legacy of Glasgow’s World Gymnastics Championships lives on. The city shone on the world stage during what was 10 days of world-class competition.
“But now the sporting world looks towards the Rio Olympics, we have been given a timely reminder of Glasgow’s growing stature as one of the world’s top five sporting cities thanks to Katy Perry’s latest music video.
“It is sign of how far Glasgow has come.”
Katy Perry has received many awards including four Guinness World Records and been included in the Forbes list of “Top-Earning Women In Music”. She is one of the best-selling musical artists of all time.
