Lee plea for Killie to find killer touch in final third

- By GRAEME McGARRY

Thistle fought out a goalless draw with Kilmarnock at Firhill on Saturday, a result that leaves them two points adrift of Dundee in sixth place.

With two games to come this week against Dundee United and Ross County prior to the split, Amoo is convinced that the Jags can make the top half of the table.

He is bracing himself for a similar scrap tomorrow night against relegation-threatened Dundee United to the one his side faced against struggling Killie at the weekend.

He said: “It was a tough game, we expected them to come out fighting. Kilmarnock are fighting for their lives down there.

“In the first half I think we did alright, but in the second half it was just a battle and our passing wasn’t up to our usual standard.

“It’s a point though and a clean sheet, so there are positives we can take away from it.

“The game changed slightly in the second half, it was more of a battle with more long balls, but we’ve got to get used to that.

“Dundee United are going to come here and do much the same I guess, so we’ve got to be more productive in those kinds of situations.

“It can be difficult, but you’ve got to find a way to influence the game.

“We’ll go again though. We got a point today and Dundee United is going to be a tough KILMARNOCK boss Lee Clark bemoaned his team’s failure to capitalise on the opportunities they created during the goalless draw at Partick.

He was, however, keen to stress his pleasure at the fact his side are making chances despite their consistent inability to convert them. game with more of the same, so hopefully we can be more like we were in the first half.”

Amoo was outstanding in the first half against Kilmarnock, giving opposition leftback Lee Hodson a torrid time

He said: “Of course I’m disappointed, we came here to win – and we hit the post and the crossbar. We just need to find a wee bit of luck in front of goal to start getting the wins we require.

“It’s not as if we are not making opportunities, we just need to keep having some belief.

“To win matches you need to take your chances and I’m and setting up their best chance of the game, which was spurned by Mathias Pogba.

He has urged his teammates though to put the disappointment of Saturday’s result out of their minds and grasp their not going to stand here and lambast my players for not taking them, I would be lambasting them if they were not being brave enough and getting themselves into positions.

“We are at the stage now where we may need require just to get a lucky goal, even a ricochet but I would be more concerned if we were not making chances.”

Thistle boss Alan Archibald chance over the next two matches.

“Right now we still have the possibility of finishing in the top six, so we’re still looking at the opportunity,” he said.

“It’s still very much in our was quite clear his side did not deserve anything more than a point in a game he labellede as an “end-of- season-scrap”.

He said: “I didn’t think we played well enough to get the three points. We knew that it would be a battle with Kilmarnock fighting for their lives and so it proved.

“We didn’t win enough of our individual battles to merit getting the three points and, in truth, Kilmarnock created the better chances in the game.

“There wasn’t a l ot of quality in the game today, Kilmarnock are fighting for their lives and you can see by the way they set up that they were looking to stay in the game for as long as possible and grab a late goal to win and it almost worked for them.

“We need to find some battling qualities.”
