Spring gets big welcome at open day
IT’S been a long time coming but spring is finally here and the new season has been celebrated by the Caerau Community Growers.
The group threw open the gates and welcomed in the community to show them around its garden, which includes fish and wildlife ponds compete with viewing deck, wigwam, cob oven and a newly-installed eco friendly, solar powered compost toilet.
The day was a huge success, with families participating in an Easter Egg Treasure Hunt. There were a variety of activities on offer including garden crafts to engage children with their families. The community had the opportunity to enjoy a range of different foods, including a chance to taste free range eggs from chickens at Caerau Cluck Inn.
Visitors at the garden also had the chance to enjoy a demonstration of a unique growing system called the QL/ Ultraponics, which is soon to be launched at Caerau Market Garden. This new growing system will enable people to grow their own food at home cost effectively without using soil.
Caerau Community Growers founder and chairman Andrew James said: “I was absolutely delighted with the level of attendance and engagement of families participating in our event. It was a fun and educational day where children and families learned new life skills, which achieved the aims and objectives of the project.
“I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all our members for all their hard work, support and ongoing commitment to our much loved community garden.”
The event was also attended by Maesteg Mayor Idris Williams and AM Huw Irranca-Davies.
The day was made possible through Invest Local Caerau.
