-

DIVISION 2 WEST CENTRAL

PENCOED .....................30 TONDU .........................13

PENCOED provided a shock at the Recreation ground in what must be considered as their best win of the season over the newly crowned champions and Silver Ball finalists.

Pencoed started brightly and retaining possession through multiple phases before flanker Jack Thompson applied the finish, outside half Jake Lloyd added a fine conversion. Pencoed soon increased their lead, Dan Watkins winning a turnover around halfway and Lloyd duly obliged from the resultant penalty. A solid Ricky Somers tackle overturned possession. Pencoed then stretched their lead, both forwards and backs combining before Somers sent Aaron Halse racing over and Lloyd converted.

The champions’ response was immediate, driving a maul to the home line before experienced No 8 Nathan Strong got the touchdown.

Pencoed led 17-5 at the interval.

Tondu took the early second half initiative and centre Josh Tatchell reduced the arrears with a penalty.

Home scrum half Rhys Clark then made a telling 40 metre break into the Tondu 22 and recycled possession saw full back Rhys Thomas bursting through to score. Lloyd converted.

Play was now to and fro and the home side picked up a second yellow card.

Tondu were now running everything back at Pencoed but the home side were sensing an upset and Watkins almost broke clear.

Pencoed then got a foothold in the Tondu 22 and Thomas calmed the Pencoed nerves slotting a drop goal to lead 27-8.

Tondu were not finished however and a sustained attack saw Tatchell cross. Lloyd then added a 40 metre penalty and despite picking up a third yellow card. Pencoed ran out worthy winners on the day.

Pencoed look to finish their season on a winning note when they entertain Cwmgors on April 25, ko 6.45pm at the Recreation ground.
