Urdd Concert: On Wednesday, April 5, a concert took place at St Davids Church to raise money for the Urdd.

The compere was Mr Anthony Bwye and it was good to see the church so full. The Maesteg Children’s Choir, with their musical director Enid-Sian Hughes, opened the concert with Love Shine a Light followed by a number of well known songs from the musicals. The choir was accompanied by Mr Richard Norton.

The audience were then treated to a solo by Karly Whelan and a clarinet solo by Holly Thompson – both are pupils at Ysgol Llangynwyd. The children from Ysgol Cynwyd Sant thrilled the audience with their programme of Welsh songs. Especially Pwy Wnaeth Y Ser Uwchben? which included actions.

Then a duet – Anfonaf Angel – by Karly and Kirstie Whelan, followed by a saxophone solo by Megan Taylor accompanied by Mrs Nia Edwards, head of music at Ysgol Llangynwyd.

Maesteg Children’s Choir then sang a number of popular songs including Hallelujah and Somewhat Out There.

The evening came to an end with everyone singing Thank You For The Music. A total of £440 was raised for the Urdd – a successful evening all round.

Côr Merched: Maesteg Ladies’ Choir excelled themselves at their annual concert in Maesteg Town Hall, led by their musical director Paul Deenik and accompanist Laura Deenik. Compere Tony Mullins kept the audience in extremely good humour throughout the evening.

Other items included our own bard’s (Wil Hopkin) Bugeilio’r Gwenith Gwyn, beautifully sung with soloist Aled Williams joining them.

Baritone soloist Meilir Jones chose a wide programme, performing operatic arias, Welsh folk songs and, as a finale, the amusing The Green-Eyed Dragon, which delighted the large audience.

Meilir graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and is now doing his postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy.

The finale of the evening was the fabulous Nella Fantasia.
