Up and coming dahlias

Keep an eye out for some of the brand new varieties that are being trialled now

- Dave Gillam

Last month I wrote about new dahlia varieties that you can buy this year. This month I’m giving you a sneak peek at those that are still on trial but have been doing well. A fair percentage are from abroad and sometimes they just don’t behave in our climate as they do in their own. Brand new trial varieties don't always

A grower for 25 years, in 2012 Dave won National Individual Champion awards at each of the English (Shepton Mallet), Welsh and Sco ish National Dahlia Society competitions, the first time this has ever been accomplished. He’s very busy on YouTube, where you’ll find dozens of videos on how to grow dahlias.

make it to market, but here are some varieties to keep an eye out for that I think have real merit for the garden and show bench.

● ‘Glenmarc Endeavour’, raised by Alf Hardingham in Australia, is a substantial giant decorative in the strongest of yellow.

● ‘Eastwood Jane’ is a small cactus/semi cactus and was the winner of the Crowley Cup at Wisley 2019, raised by John Sharp in Essex.

● The waterlily ‘Ashleigh Moray’, raised by Colin McLaughlin in Australia, will work well in the garden and show bench.

● ‘Tracey Diane’ is a sport from the small decorative ‘Winlolme Diane’. It is raised by Robin Moyser and will be top of the exhibitors’ list hopefully at the end of 2020.

● A new fimbriated variety ‘Hapet Spirit’, raised by Peter Haselhofer from Austria, is very eye-catching and will also be good for the garden or show bench.

● I saw a great vase of the new miniature decorative, ‘Twighlight Boy’, raised by Gabby Hayes at the National Dahlia Society Show in the Terry Clarke Trophy last year. Dave Spencer cut the five quality blooms from only two plants, which says a lot for this consistent variety.
