Fairmuir progress in cup after a second-half blitz
A FOUR-GOAL secondha l f sa lvo ensu red Fairmuir disposed of Ferry Ath letic in the U/15 Jean Pierre Babin Cup at Dawson Park.
Fairmuir took the lead in the first half when Aiden Lockhart volleyed home directly from a drop ball.
There was no further scoring before the interval with both sides struggling to create any openings
However, after Ferry had passed up a great opportunity to level early in second half, Fairmuir went on the rampage
Their second goal came via a shot from outside the box after a good piece of skill by Brodie Cussick
Harrison Smith added No 3 after a good run from the right before Ryan Mullholland slotted home a penalty after Thomas Cunningham was brought down by the keeper.
Then Cunningham got his own name on the scoresheet by grabbing a fifth for the Dundee side, who had top performers in centre-half Fergus Scott and midfield duo Cussick and Craig McLellen.
Fairmuir manager Colin Cussick felt the outcome was fair, saying: “We were probably on top for most of the first half but only had one goal to show for it.
“However, Ferry had a big chance to equalise early in the second half but they missed it. That was a real let-off for us but credit to the lads they took full advantage and went on and scored a second and third goal.
“After that, the game was dead and we made changes. We got another couple of goals and we were quite comfortable, although, to be honest, it wasn’t a great game.”
Fairmuir are back on cup duty this Sunday when they travel to play Carnoustie in the Tommy Clark Trophy.
While the Gowfers play in a different league division to his side, Cussick is well aware of their threat.
“They are a very good team and we know it will be a hard game – it always is at Carnoustie.”
