Families of all shapes and sizes invited to selfie shoot

-

DUNDEE-BASED artist Sofia Sita is creating a piece of work aimed at highlighting modern-day Dundee families.

The Dundonians is part of a free exhibition at the DCA from December 3 called DCA Thomson. The partnership between DCA and DC Thomson celebrates the 80th anniversary of The Broons and Oor Wullie. Six artists will be participating.

Each has visited the DC Thomson archives and will be responding to what they saw with their own artwork, including paintings, sculptures and illustrations.

To create her interactive artwork, Sofia will be painting a modern living room backdrop on to one of the walls outside the galleries on November 24 and the DCA will then run a campaign for families to come and take selfies in front of the sofa. They will then submit their selfies via social media.

Sofia will create 25 individual portraits from the images submitted and each person featured will receive a copy too.

She will also paint another image of a room inside the galleries with 25 blank photo frames on it. The visitors’ images will appear in these frames.

Sofia studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan.

“In my opinion, 21st Century art must relate to the community and every time I start a project I try to think of how I can involve people directly or indirectly,” she said.

“With The Dundonians I wanted to find a way to involve people and create their own family pictures.”

Sofia wants to involve as many different families as possible.

“By family I don’t just mean mum, dad and kids — it could be a group of students who share a flat, a small neighbourhood community or a group of people who work together and so on,” she said.
