Arsenal’s Mavropanos could reunite with Mislintat as German sides chase loan deal

- Simon Collings

ARSENAL defender Konstantinos Mavropanos is in talks with Stuttgart and Werder Bremen over a loan move for next season.

Mavropanos has just finished six months at German second division side Nurnberg, where he impressed.

The 22-year-old’s performances have attracted interest from other sides in Germany and he is expected to stay in the country through another loan.

Mavropanos, however, is likely to join a side in the top-flight, with Stuttgart and Bremen in talks with Arsenal over a deal.

The Bundesliga clubs are keen to sign Mavropanos on loan for next season and Arsenal are open to such terms.

Stuttgart’s push to sign the centre-back is being driven by Arsenal’s former head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat, who is now the German side’s sporting director. Mislintat left Arsenal in February last year after just 14 months, but in that time he oversaw a number of signings.

One of those was Mavropanos, who Arsenal bought from Greek side PAS Giannina for a fee in the region of £2.2million in January 2018.

The Greek defender was one of Mislintat’s recommended buys for Arsenal and he is now hoping to link up with him again at Stuttgart.

They face competition, however, from Bremen, who were tracking him before he joined Arsenal.

The Gunners are willing to let Mavropanos leave on loan, given the number of centre-backs they have.

Arsenal have six centre-backs in their squad — seven if you include Sead Kolasinac — and that will increase to eight when William Saliba arrives this summer, following a season on loan at Saint-Etienne.

As a result, it is thought Mavropanos would benefit from another loan.
