WE’VE GOT LOTS TO DO

KANE WARNS ENGLAND MUST WORK ON ALL AREAS AFTER LATE WINNER SEALS FINALS SLOT

- Simon Johnson Football Correspondent

HARRY KANE admits England will have to improve in all departments if they are to make any impact at next summer’s World Cup.

England booked their place at the Finals in Russia last night but put on an unconvincing display — winning 1-0 through an injury time winner.

Wembley was half empty by the time Kane, who was captain for the night, scored, while many fans resorted to throwing paper aeroplanes to keep themselves entertained during the 90 minutes. Gareth Southgate’s side secured top spot in Group F with a game to spare but will obviously face much tougher opposition in Russia.

When asked what England have to improve on, Kane replied: “I don’t think there is just one thing, we need to work on everything.

“We are getting to know each other more and more, every time we are together. We have to stay focused and keep doing what we are doing tactically, physically, mentally and see what happens. The World Cup is still a long way off, we have a few friendly games before then to keep working on what the manager wants us to do.

“Everyone has their own opinion of where they think we are at. We just have to keep working hard. We won’t set ourselves any expectations, we will just go and enjoy it.”

Kane, who won for the first time as captain of the national side, says there are a number of countries that would love to be in England’s position. None of the other home nations look like going through automatically, while Holland, Sweden, Italy, Portugal and Argentina are not assured of their place either.

Kane added: “We should enjoy this. It is no easy thing getting to a World Cup, there are some big countries around the world that are struggling. We should be proud as a team and as a nation.

“It is an amazing feeling to score, no matter what the time, and it’s great to go through to the World Cup. That (the timing of his goal) shows you should never give up, to keep going to that last minute. We have done it a few times in this campaign.”

Southgate now has the luxury of using their final qualifier away in Lithuania on Sunday as an opportunity to try new things. The FA have also confirmed that England will play world champions Germany and Brazil at Wembley next month as part of their preparations.
