Let’s take this outside

Festivals Frank Ocean is headed for E3, Gilles Peterson is Brixton-bound and Skepta is headlining Wireless — let the capital’s parks be your dancefloor this summer, says David Smyth

IT’S OK to admit that you love music but hate festivals. Live music outside as the sun goes down? Thumbs up. But all the extracurricular activities around it — tent-erection, horrifying toilets and trying to sleep next door to someone who brought a bloody ukulele — can feel like things we inflict upon ourselves because there are no big wars we can go off and fight in nowadays.

London wins as the summer approaches, with no end of outdoor fun that has a Tube ride home at the end of it. And if you’re so urban that even Hyde Park feels a bit too countrysidey, a handful of these “festivals” are actually inside. Here’s what’s coming up this summer. June 30-July 9, Hyde Park, W1

Hyde Park’s regular all-day events have once again cherry-picked some of the biggest names around. For fans of the oldies there’s Phil Collins back from retirement on June 30 and Tom Petty accompanied by his Heartbreakers on July 9. Rock and indie fans are well catered for by Green Day ( July 1), Kings of Leon

( July 6) and The Killers ( July 8), and there’s even a pop day starring none other than Justin Bieber on July 2. Impressive support acts across the week include Blondie, Pixies, Elbow and Stevie Nicks. bst-hydepark.com July 7-9, Finsbury Park, N4

While fans of guitar music will be gathering in Hyde Park on this weekend, north London is the place to be for hip hop and R&B. A huge raft of US stars will jet in for the Friday and Sunday events, with Chance the Rapper, Fetty Wap and Bryson Tiller on Friday and The Weeknd and Nas on Sunday. Saturday has more of a homegrown feel, featuring grime stars Skepta, Wiley and Section Boyz. wirelessfestival.co.uk June 3-23, London Stadium, E20

The home of the Olympics and West Ham United is the venue for some massive gigs in June, kicking off with Depeche Mode’s first UK stadium appearance since 1993 on June 3. The really big news is the UK’s only chance to see Axl Rose and Slash trying not to kill each other across two shows with the reformed Guns N’ Roses on June 16-17. Finally Robbie Williams makes his first stadium
