A family affair for Mhairi and Meghan
In August a mother and daughter were celebrating an unique achievement after they were both crowned Scottish shot put champions in the same month.
Mhairi Porterfield claimed the Scottish senior championship crown on August 17 at Grangemouth.
And that came seven days after 14-year-old daughter Meghan achieved the same feat in the Scottish U15 event at the same venue – breaking a Scottish record that had stood for 35 years in the process.
It’s the first time members of the same family have won national shot put titles in the same year.
Mhairi has a strong pedigree having also won the title last year and in 2003, but it was a first crown for Meghan, who looks set to follow in her mother’s footsteps.
Mhairi, from Greenhills, said “I’m incredibly proud of Meghan, she’s been amazing.
“She’s very talented and doesn’t realise how talented she is either.”
Mhairi’s win was a double celebration as she managed to beat rival and 2014 Commonwealth Games competitor Kirsty Yates to the title.
The 38-year-old competed at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in the hammer and she was thrilled to come out on top.
For Duncanrig Secondary School pupil Meghan, she is only a few years into the sport, but she was thrilled to become a champion alongside her mum.
“It’s really cool being champions at the same time,” Meghan beamed.
“A lot of my friends in athletics have commented on it and appreciate the achievement, so it’s really nice.
“It was really good to break the record as well.”
