THE new year has begun in smashing style at a West Fife tennis club after they welcomed an award-winning former coach back.

Dunfermline Tennis Club, which is located in the city’s Bothwell Street, have moved to appoint Alan Russell and Alessia Palmieri as their new, joint head coaches.

The pair have taken over from

Graeme Clarkson, who held the role previously, and their appointment for 2023 represents a return to the club for Alan, who also coaches at Brucehaven Tennis Club, which is based in Limekilns.

During his previous stint as head coach with Dunfermline, Alan was named as Tennis Scotland’s Coach of the Year twice – in 2013 and 2018 – in recognition of his work in managing the club’s tennis programmes.

In 2019, Alan was also shortlisted for the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) Coach of the Year prize, one of 30 national finalists across 10 categories for the awards, which were launched in 2015.

A club spokesperson said: “Both Alan and Alessia have enthusiastically made big plans for the year ahead, and are excited to take forward a full programme of tennis events.

“On offer will be coaching for all ages and abilities, plus competitions and fun social events across the calendar year.”

So far in January, the club has held its traditional New Year’s Day ‘fun doubles’; as well as indoor sessions for youngsters aged between four and eight; and a meet-and hit session for juniors aged eight and over.

An adult meet and hit takes place this Saturday and, for more information, find the club on Facebook.
