Union flag should show places of safety

-

I FEEL I must challenge Phil Garner’s letter (“Bragging with the flag is extremely un-British”, March 31).

I don’t see any evidence, and neither does he supply any evidence, to prove that flying our national flag is “an ostentatious display of Britishness”.

I have long thought that all public buildings (local authority, emergency services, etc) should fly the flag of the United Kingdom, the Union Jack. Not for the reasons Mr Garner appears to think it is being flown for, “to get away with all sorts of dodgy behaviour”, but to indicate to all people buildings where they should be able to find safety and assistance.

Please, Mr Garner, facilitate me with the information regarding “Mr Johnson’s Cabinet doing more to facilitate the break-up of the Union than any preceding government”. Maybe I was asleep when this was happening. I only see one person currently trying to facilitate the break-up of the Union, and she is neither a Conservative nor Labour politician.

He further goes on to say that “there is no mystery where this swaggering attitude has its origins. The British governments’ – particularly Conservative ones obsession with copying America”. I would rather have them copy America with its flag waving obsession than join America in starting a war like Tony Blair did.

Where I will agree with him is on Americanisms creeping into the British vocabulary. I’d much rather have a murder than a homicide.
