A GRATEFUL mum has thanked a stall assistant for coming to her rescue on Halloween.

Tabitha Stewart, who lives in Bath, desperately wanted to try to find a pumpkin that could be delivered to her son Billy Kiely, who is currently in self-isolation at the University of Derby after one of his flatmates tested positive for coronavirus.

She said: “On Saturday morning, he said that he would like a pumpkin to carve like we do every year but obviously he couldn’t go out. I thought I would try to find one but I live in Bath and I am not allowed to visit, so I rang all the greengrocers I could find in Derby.

“Everyone was really kind and had helpful suggestions but apparently it’s been a bad year and no one had a pumpkin left. I tried farms – no answer. I tried supermarkets and Tesco’s customer support in Dundee scoured the country, but no pumpkins.”

Just as she thought she might have to give up, Mrs Stewart contacted R & L Fruits in Derby Market Hall and spoke to an assistant called Beth. Mrs Stewart added: “They hadn’t got one but she said if I couldn’t find one, to ring her back and she would find a sweet shop number for me instead.

“After another hour with no pumpkins, I rang her back for the sweet shop number and she volunteered to put a box together for me.

“I forwarded some money and she made a lovely box with his name and a pumpkin drawing on it and filled it with Halloween treats. I sent a taxi to pick it up from her and deliver it to outside his door.

“This all worked perfectly and he was really happy to receive it. It would not have been possible without the help of Beth, who I have never met and had no reason to help me.

“She was just a really kind and lovely person putting herself out for a complete stranger. She’s only 18 and said she did it because it would make her happy if someone did it for her.”
