YOU COULD HAVE A DOOR JUST LIKE THE PM’S

- By HELEN KREFT helen.kreft@reachplc.com

A REPLICA of the world’s most famous front door could take pride of place at your house.

Tutbury Castle is holding an attic sale this weekend to make way for new items as it moves on from a tough year due to the pandemic.

And among the items up for grabs is s a life-sized replica of the door to Num- ber 10 Downing Street, historic home e to the UK’s Prime Ministers.

Castle curator Lesley Smith had the door from her time when she she used to give talks dressed as Margaret Thatcher. Ms Smith is well known for her engaging talks when she dresses as s well known personalities from history, y, including Mary Queen of Scots, who o was imprisoned at Tutbury Castle dur- ing the 16th Century.

Ms Smith also appears as Elizabeth I, , who was Mary’s cousin and also signed d her death warrant.

Along with the door, the sale includes furniture, a cherry-coloured accordion and a full archery set, as befitting a castle like Tutbury, which is a scheduled ancient monument.

The attic sale is being held to make way for new stock. It comes after the castle received a lifeline boost of more than £58,000 to save it from permanent closure.

The castle, which dates back more than 1,000 years, has been handed money from the £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund to help it through the coronavirus pandemic after it was forced to close for months. The cash will help restart vital reconstruction

work and maintenance on heritage sites, keeping venues open and supporting those working in the sector.

The castle’s attic sale will be held in the venue’s marquee from 11am to 4pm on Sunday. It is free to enter but car parking costs £1. Due to social distancing rules, visitors will have to prebook a time slot to attend and will need to wear face masks.
