Over-70s ‘hooked on sex’
ALMOST 100 Brits have been treated for sex addiction on the NHS in the past five years – including one person in their 90s.
Three sexaholics in their 80s also had to seek professional help for their uncontrollable urges, and many others over 70.
NHS Digital figures revealed 95 people – 69 men and 26 women – have been treated for “an excessive sex drive”.
The majority of them were in the 40 to 50 age range.
The latest NHS figures available – for 2018-19 – show that 20 men and seven women were treated for sex addiction, and four of those were in their 70s.
The year before, 14 people were treated and three of those were in their 70s.
According to Relate, sex addiction is when people feel their sex lives are “out of control”.
Three years ago, the World Health Organization said that sex addiction was a mental health disorder.
Patients must suffer from the disorder for at least six months, and experience substantial distress as a result of their addiction, before a diagnosis can be made.
Nuno Albuquerque, from the UK Addiction Treatment Group, said: “The idea of someone being addicted to sex may seem implausible, but it is as real an addiction as drug addiction. “Sex can come to fill a person’s waking life. They develop a physical and psychological compulsive need to seek, observe or engage in sexual behaviour, in spite of any negative consequences.
“It can happen to anyone, of any sex, at any age.
“It is not dirty or shameful – it often stems from abuse experienced during childhood, family dysfunction, hormones or biochemical imbalances.” Famous sex addicts have included Michael Douglas, Russell Brand and Tiger Woods.
