Kachunga: Germans no match for Prem heroes
ELIAS KACHUNGA watched the English clubs sweep aside their German opponents in the Champions League with a wry smile on his face.
That’s because Huddersfield’s German forward could remind his friends back home just what he faces on a weekly basis.
Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham sent the three Bundesliga sides – Schalke, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund – packing by an aggregate score of 17-3. With the other three members of the top six also progressing in Europe, the Premier League is highlighting its strength. So while Huddersfield, who travel to West Ham today, prop up the table with just 14 points after a miserable season, Kachunga knows how high the standard is. “The results did not surprise me because the Premier League is the best in
“It shows how strong this league is.
“People in Germany are jealous of this. When I go back home, everyone says to me that it is not shameful to be bottom of this league, especially as Huddersfield is a small club.
“To compete against these clubs that play in the Champions League is not easy.
“Everyone has a big respect for us even to be in this league.”
Kachunga, 26, was brought to Huddersfield in 2016 by previous manager David Wagner when they were in the Championship. It was a special achievement to gain promotion but now, after two seasons, the adventure has eight games left, starting at the London Stadium today, and Kachunga is determined to take it all in. “When I first came here, no one in Germany had heard of Huddersfield,” he added.
“Then we were promoted and after our great season last year, we had more attention.
“This year has been a difficult season but we are still in the Premier League for now and we have to enjoy these last few games.”
