Champ fires ‘retire’ jibe at Carl
JOSH WARRINGTON has vowed to send Carl Frampton into retirement.
Leeds boxer Warrington defends his IBF featherweight title against former two-weight world champion Frampton at Manchester Arena on Saturday night.
And he reckons there will be no way back for the Belfast fighter (right)
if he loses this weekend.
He said: “He can turn around and say ‘Josh is a good fighter and a world champion’ and all of this, but I think it will be his pipe and slippers moment after that.
“The only thing he could do is move up to superfeatherweight and have a big fight with Irish fighter
James Tennyson in Belfast.
“If he loses to me after downplaying some of my wins it will be kind of embarrassing in a way.”
Warrington feels retirement has been on 31-year-old Frampton’s mind for a while despite losing just once in 27 fights, against WBA champion Leo Santa Cruz.
He said: “He did a documentary and there was around five minutes where he was talking about retirement.
“When you’re on top of your game, when you’re at your peak feeling as good as you are, you shouldn’t be thinking of stuff like that.
“You retire because you may have had a £10m fight or you don’t want to get punched in the head anymore. You should want to create a legacy and keep having big fights.” Warrington’s trainer and dad, Sean O’Hagan, had a few career change ideas for Frampton, who claimed he was “a level above” his son. O’Hagan said: “Maybe he can get a job on a building site with a spirit level because he is always on about levels.
“Maybe he could be a lift engineer because he knows that many different levels.”
