BEAUTY FROM THE EAST

Heatwave forecast for chilly Brits

- By RUTH McKEE

BRITAIN is set to bask in a glorious 10-day heatwave with temperatures soaring towards a sizzling 30C.

A welcome weather system dubbed the Beauty From The East is on its way, forecasters have promised.

APRIL showers will give way to clear blue skies and sun in a 10-day heatwave.

Baking hot weather will blast across the UK as a high pressure front dubbed the “Beauty From The East” hits our shores next month.

Forecasters predict the mercury will soar into the high 20s and could even hit a sizzling 30C.

During a mini-heatwave last week, runners battled through record-breaking highs of 24C at the London Marathon, with scores of them collapsing along the 26.2-mile route.

Sarah Sammy, of The Weather Channel, said of next month: “High pressure over central Europe will drift eastward and another area of high pressure will build over the North Atlantic.

“During this time, an area of low pressure in-between will split, and the smaller low will stall for a while near the Bay of Biscay and pump up warmer air over the UK.”

But the country will have to suffer a few more rainy days before the warm weather sweeps back in.

Forecasters warn sudden showers and a brief icy blast will batter areas across the north today and tomorrow.

The unsettled weather will spread into the south at the weekend before things improve next week.

Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson explained: “Last week we had high pressure dominating the weather. This week it’s low pressure, so we’ve got more unsettled conditions.

“Last week we had southerly winds which were dragging up warmer air from the south, but we’ve now got winds coming from a cooler direction.”

The Met Office’s long-range forecast predicted we are set to bathe in a long spell of warm weather once the sharp showers stop.

It promised: “A dry and bright spell of weather with light winds may develop at the start of this period (around May 10) especially in the north, bringing slightly above-average temperatures.”
