NOW IT’S ARISE SIR WAYNE
Fans bet he gets honour
ENGLAND’S top goalscorer Wayne Rooney is tipped to be knighted after beating football legend Sir Bobby Charlton’s record.
Fans want the Manchester United star to get a call from Buck House.
WAYNE Rooney is set to be knighted after becoming England’s highest-ever goalscorer.
Odds have been slashed on the Manchester United star being made a sir after netting his 50th international goal, against Switzerland on Tuesday.
He is also among the favourites to be named Sports Personality of the Year.
Floods of bets have rolled in after Roo, 29, scored from the penalty spot in the European Championships qualifier to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s Three Lions record.
He is now at just 4-1 with Ladbrokes – down from 10-1 – to become Sir Wayne before 2020.
The bookmaker’s spokesman Alex Donohue said: “Fans nationwide are convinced we’ll hear ‘Arise Sir Wayne’ sooner rather than later.”
Rooney thanked his England team- mates after he landed the record and promised there is “more to come” in a heartfelt speech.
He walked into the dressing room to a deafening round of applause and cheers from his pals, as manager Roy Hodgson handed him a special England shirt with “50” on the back.
The striker said: “This is such a huge moment for myself and my family.
“Hopefully there is a lot more to come and we can be successful. It means the world to me.”
He later posted a picture on Twitter with wife Coleen, also 29, and wrote alongside it: “Huge honour to be record goal scorer. A night I’ll never forget.”
Rooney is now down from 33-1 to 14-1 with William Hill to land the BBC Sports Personality of the Year crown. World Champion heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill is the favourite.
