Jennings: I’d have lit up in goal for Reds

- EXCLUSIVE by DAVID SNEYD

GOALKEEPING legend Pat Jennings says Liverpool are so good right now that he could smoke a cigarette between the posts and just watch them run opponents ragged.

The Spurs icon will be on hand to see his old side battle with Manchester City today and while Hugo Lloris and Ederson will be on show, Jennings admits he would love to be in Alisson’s position instead.

Liverpool are set to end their 30-year wait for a league title and Jennings feels the chemistry between the Brazil stopper, 27, and his defence set them apart from everyone else.

“It doesn’t matter how good a goalkeeper you are, you need good players around you,” he said.

“I always felt that I could get away with making a mistake because we had the players who could make up for it. You didn’t want to get into the habit of course.

“You watch this Liverpool team now and they are so good.

“They’re excellent and you can tell the understanding they all have. They are great to watch.”

Jennings turns 75 in June but is still at the Spurs’ training base every day, where he oversees the academy goalkeeper coaches in his role as a consultant.

The Northern Irishman set what was a world record for international appearances when he retired with 119 caps – finishing against Brazil at the 1986 World Cup.

Spurs’ current No.1 Lloris is just five caps shy of that total for France and lifted the biggest prize of all when he captained his country to World Cup glory in 2018.

“Lloris is a World Cup winner and you have to respect that. He has so much experience,” added Jennings.

“He has had a bad injury this season and come back from it. The fact Jose Mourinho brought him straight back in would suggest that he has him marked as his first choice.

“Then you have a player like Ederson, who is a top-class goalkeeper.”
