City thump Thistle as top three march on

- Alison Mcconnell

There was no change at the top of the SWPL as the top trio all flexed their domestic muscle.

Leaders Glasgow City hammered Partick Thistle 8-1 to stay three points ahead of Celtic, who beat Aberdeen 3-0. Rangers, a point behind Fran Alonso’s side, enjoyed a 4-0 win over Dundee United.

Glasgow City look like a team who have firmly rediscovered their stride after losing the league for the first time in 14 years last term.

Recent weeks have seen a show of strength from the team and it remains to be seen if Leanne Ross will now take the job on a permanent basis.

Claire Walsh, a Priscilla Chinchilla brace, a Linda Motlhalo effort and Kinga Kozak goal put Glasgow City five up at the break as they blew Thistle away.

Lisa Forrest and Lauren Davidson added goals before Rachel Donaldson netted a consolation and City’s Megan Foley struck.

Celtic boss Fran Alonso was irked at his side’s firsthalf performance but was relieved that Chloe Craig broke the deadlock just before the interval.

There were second-half goals from Claire O’Riordan and Natalie Ross in a more comfortable display.

“I am very pleased,” said the Spaniard. “We had a lot of mistakes in the first half but we scored at a key time and then I recognised us more in the second half.

“The goal just before half-time was very important.”

Rangers celebrated a Kayla McCoy double with further goals from Tessel Middag and Kirsty Howat as they took all three points from Dundee United.

Rachael Boyle marked her return from maternity leave with a double as Hibs thumped Glasgow Women 7-0 and moved within five points of Hearts, who were held 1-1 at Motherwell.

Elsewhere, Spartans beat Hamilton Accies 1-0 with Louise Mason scoring.
