I can’t lie to your face. Just don’t trust me on WhatsApp

Ellie Taylor asks contestants to put their detective hats on and sniff out true stories

CI always thought I had pretty bad intuition – that is completely correct Ellie Taylor

omedian and Strictly Come Dancing star Ellie Taylor has a brand new show hitting screens this week, something she describes as a “cross between Line of Duty and Would I Lie To You? with a dash of Gogglebox”.

You Won’t Believe This sees armchair sleuths get a chance to test out their detecting skills in real life as they are tasked with finding the genuine person among four “suspects” all peddling unbelievable stories.

If the amateur sleuth correctly guesses who is telling the truth they win £5000 – but if they are foiled, the person who fooled them gets the money.

It’s a concept that sounds far more complex than it is and it makes for compelling viewing. Yet, despite hosting it and sitting through hours of people lying, Ellie admitted that she is still clueless when it comes to actually sussing out the fibbers.

“I’m rubbish. I just can’t tell. I think I’m just quite naïve,” she revealed. “I always thought I had pretty bad intuition – and that was completely correct. I think I guessed maybe two of the truth tellers in the whole series. I cannot believe I can be hoodwinked so easily and I just think I feel strangely proud that Britain is full of such great liars.

“I realised I’ve got no intuition and I can’t trust myself, which is a very unsettling way to live life. And just because a thing sounds absolutely mad, doesn’t mean it isn’t true. Sometimes, it’s the maddest ones that are actually the truth.”

Unsurprisingly, following that revelation, she admitted she would be useless on the other side of the show.

Ellie said: “I can’t lie. I’m absolutely awful. Which is mad, I know, as I perform. But no, I can’t. I can lie in written form. Don’t trust me over WhatsApp. But in real life you’d be able to work me out very quickly.”

The show is just the latest string in Ellie’s bow. She has branched out from her stand-up roots into acting in shows such as Plebs and presenting several TV shows and even appearing on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing – and she couldn’t be more thrilled.

“I just really feel incredibly lucky that I have such a varied career and how amazing that I get to do acting and presenting and I get to be on Strictly as well. It’s wild, so I’m so chuffed with life at the moment,” she said gleefully.
