Muir out to repay Wasps after concussion

-

WILLIE MUIR can’t recall the moment of impact – and not because of the case of beers his former team-mate sent him by way of an apology for their accidental collision.

The keeper came round in the physio room at the Indodrill with a neck brace on surrounded by folk, only to be in the dark over how he’d got there.

Four-and-a-half months on from that friendly, which was abandoned with 10 minutes left as the then trialist went to hospital, Muir is relishing his

chance to repay Alloa for giving him a deal just days later.

The long-serving Queen’s Park stalwart could have no complaints playing second fiddle to an in-form Rangers loanee Jay Hogarth this season.

But a knock for the 19-yearold in the warm-up at Kelty a fortnight ago saw Muir get the nod before making it back-toback competitive starts for the first time in more than a year.

On that day and his collision with former Spiders teammate Charlie Fox, he said: “I can’t remember much about it. I don’t even remember how the ball went out for the corner in the first place. Alloa were great with me – the physio Stuart was really good and the manager as well because that happened the Tuesday, then they signed me on the Thursday.

“It was a concussion then I hurt my shoulder as well.

“I went for a scan but it wasn’t anything too serious. The club paid for it all, so they have been great with me.

“It was only a matter of letting that settle down, then get back into it. Six weeks after it I was back in training, getting involved in things.

“I was back out of hospital and home for half 12, 1am because there was somebody in the house, so I was lucky. I had moved back into my mum and dad’s not long before it. And they were at the game so I think they got a bit of a fright.

“But I can’t mind anything about it, just vaguely waking up in the physio room and seeing Euan, the Queen’s Park physio.

“I asked, ‘What’s happened?’. He said, ‘You’ve been knocked out but you’re all right’.

“There were all these people round about the physio bed just looking at me, I’ve got a neck brace on, my head is taped to a board... I’m like that, ‘What the f*** has happened here?’. I couldn’t move anything.

“I got the video sent to me the next day off the Queen’s Park media guy and I’m glad I can’t remember much about it. I’ve watched it back, there is a fair old clatter. Foxy messaged me the night it happened and sent a case of beer to my house.

“He said, ‘I am so sorry mate, I didn’t mean it’. I told him don’t worry about it, it’s just one of these things, it was a coming together, it happens. The Modelos beers were decent. I wouldn’t say worth the concussion but they were nice!”

The psychological hurdle that often comes on return has been cleared and Muir will be hoping Brian Rice retains him for today’s trip to Edinburgh.

He said: “When you come for a cross, nine times out of 10 you’re never going to catch it without getting a dunt. So

there is that wee mental bit but as soon as that’s away, there is nothing stopping you. It went away reasonably quickly.

“The gaffer has been brilliant with me. I know myself, I’ve been in the game long enough, Jay went in and did really well, so I couldn’t complain I’ve not been playing. But he picked up a wee knock and hopefully I have done enough to stay in.”
