Del won’t be seeing new faces

- BY SCOTT BURNS

DEREK McINNES has claimed there will be no new signings at cash-strapped Aberdeen this month.

The Dons boss has been told there is no scope with the latest Covid-19 lockdown set to tighten the financial squeeze on clubs.

McInnes was unable to offer a deal to Hearts-bound Gary Mackay-Steven and lost out to St Mirren in a pre-contract for Eamonn Brophy.

He said: “Like every manager we would have liked to have added one or two but there will be no signings coming in this month.

“We are just trying to be smart in what might lie ahead for us.”

McInnes is likely to come out of the window down in numbers, as Marley Watkins’ loan won’t be renewed, Ronny Hernandez looks set to join Atlanta United and decisions still have to be taken on the loans of Gary Woods and Ryan Edmondson. Both deals expire after tommorow’s clash with Rangers but Bruce Anderson and Miko Virtanen have returned from loan spells away.

The Aberdeen boss added: “I would like to make one or two changes but I believe in the potential of the squad.

“We have good players here and if we get a fair wind in getting more players available and we can get some players back from injury then I’m confident we can fulfil what we want to achieve in the second half of the campaign.”

McInnes confirmed he had made a pitch for long-term target Brophy.

He said: “He’s a player that I have liked for a while so I’m disappointed that we’re not in a position to bring him here.

“He has chosen St Mirren and we have to accept that.”

McInnes has also left the door open for Scott Wright to re-open contract talks.

The Dons boss said: “We’ve invested a lot in him and we’re disappointed that we’re not going to be able to continue that beyond this season.

“Hopefully the door isn’t closed but the indications are that he’s keen to explore other options.”
