Sandy is all set to Tech his game to a new level

- BY BERNIE MCGUIRE

SCOTS Robert MacIntyre and tied in Sandy Scott will be reunited for the first time in four years for the opening two rounds wing on at Winged Foot.

The pair were amateur team-mates when thescots at five-man Scotland side successfully defended the 2016 European Team US open Championship in France. Now they’re playing partners at the US Open along with Kurt Kitayama of the USA.

MacIntyre is Scotland’s top-ranked pro at 89th in the world while Scott is our highest rated amateur.

Scott, a senior at Texas Tech University, got his US Open call-up a month ago because he was sixth on the world amateur rankings.

He said: “I came out to Texas at the end of July then played the US Amateur and have been in Texas since that finished.

“We started school two weeks ago and it’s certainly different. It’s all online so I’m able to get out on the golf course more often.

“Getting into the US Open has been a nice bonus. It was announced in June or July that the top seven non-exempt players on the World Amateur rankings would be getting into the field and I was sitting eighth at the time.

“That’s why I wanted to play in the US Amateur to play my way into one of those spots and everything worked out well in the end after I had a solid tournament.

“I’ve been preparing for this week ever since. To play in a Major has been my goal since I started playing golf.”

Scott got his first look at Winged Foot on Monday and added: “It’s a great course and it’s going to be a very hard test.”

Connor Syme, the third Scot in the field, will tee-up in his first US Major in the last group on day one at 7.12pm, joined by Frenchman Paul Barjon and American Marty Jertson.
