I ONLY HAVE ONE GOAL

Sam desperate to topple Alf and Eddy in scoring charts

- BY SCOTT BURNS

ABERDEEN striker Sam Cosgrove is determined to outgun Alfredo Morelos and Odsonne Edouard and win Scotland’s golden boot.

The Dons star finished one goal behind Morelos at the top of the Premiership scoring charts last season and is now determined to go one better.

The Englishman heads to Ibrox today on a mission to make amends for Wednesday’s League Cup shootout misery at Tynecastle when he was one of three Aberdeen players to miss after netting twice from the spot during the 90 minutes.

Cosgrove, who has 13 goals in 13 games this season, said: “I want to be up there again.

“This season I want to do better, score as many goals as I can, get more than Morelos and be the top striker.

“There is a lot of competition and a lot of goals within the top teams and if I’m up and around them all then that would be a good accolade for me.

“It would be massive to finish as top scorer. Anything the Old Firm don’t win is an achievement!

“We all know how dominating they can be so for that accolade to come back to Pittodrie at the end of the season would be great.”

The striker is very much a man on form so much so his early-season exploits saw him sit as the top scorer in Europe and that even led to him being linked with Serie A giants Lazio.

He admitted that was mad and comes just a few years after he was turning out for English non-league side North Ferriby.

Cosgrove said: “It was a bit of a crazy thing. The past 48 months, going from playing non-league to being linked with a top Serie A side, is crazy.

“As soon as I heard it I thought it was a load of rubbish.

“I got a message from one of my mates early in the morning with the original story from Italy and asking me what all this was about?

“I told him it was a load of rubbish but it started to grow on Twitter and online and took off for two or three weeks.

“I don’t know if it was just talk or if there was anything in it. You can never be sure.”

The former Carlisle attacker wants to keep grabbing the headlines and knows Aberdeen would do precisely that with another win at Ibrox.

The Dons won at Ibrox twice last season, in the league and they knocked Rangers out of the Scottish Cup in a replay, and also beat them at Hampden in the Betfred Cup semi-final. Cosgrove believe he and his team-mates can use those wins to their advantage.

He said: “We still take a lot of confidence going down there knowing the results we had against them will still be in the back of their minds.

“It should be a good game. I’ve been impressed with Rangers this season and they look like they’re a good outfit.

“The past few years it has been a rebuild job in getting the team up to the level that the club demands.

“Steven Gerrard has done a brilliant job but I still think they’re a team who are still building and they’re a team we will need to be wary of.”
