Murdoch storms back to form in fast Korea move

-

ROSS MURDOCH turned back the clock in Glasgow last night with a power show that all but booked his ticket to this summer’s world championships in Korea.

Murdoch, 25, stormed to second place in the 200 metres breaststroke final at the British Championships with his quickest time in two years.

His late charge just failed to overhaul English rival James Wilby with Stirling University teammate Craig Benson third.

But even though Wilby nailed down his worlds spot in Gwangju – and Murdoch faces a sweat until Monday’s selection meeting – it was a major return to form.

Murdoch said: “That’s brilliant, just to see the 2:07 on the board.

“Sure it was an 2:07.96 but it’s those one-hundreds that make the difference. I’m just delighted to show something for all the work I’ve put in. I’ve been chasing my time from the 2014 Commonwealth Games for quite a while.

“And that should be good enough to get to South Korea.”

Duncan Scott reckons his tough Tollcross schedule this week will toughen him up for worlds after landing another 100m butterfly medal.

The Euro champ, 21, set a Scottish record of 52.25 secs for silver behind Jimmy Guy as a warm-up in his hunt for a freestyle double over 200m tomorrow.

Scott said: “The fly events are just to challenge myself, I find them harder than freestyle.

“But at worlds it could be quite a busy schedule so it’s to try to transition that way.”

Freya Anderson bagged the women’s freestyle double in the 100m in 53.79 secs with Lucy Hope leading Scot in fourth.

And emotional Jessica Fullalove, 21, confessed her 200m backstroke win meant the world after almost quitting when she broke both hands.

She said: “I knew I hadn’t reached my full potential yet. I knew I wasn’t done with the sport and that’s what got me through.”

Edinburgh’s Kat Greenslade was third and 14-year-old Glaswegian Katie Shanahan underlined her exciting potential with seventh place.
