ACCIES KIDS UP TO TEST
SCOTT McMANN reckons Hamilton’s Premiership survival mission is being boosted by the batch of rising stars appearing on their horizon.
The Accies defender is well aware of the talent emerging from the club’s Under-17s side that went through last season undefeated to earn league title glory and qualification for the UEFA Youth League.
Eight players from that squad have been signed on full-time professional contracts and McMann insists any competition for first-team places will keep them on their toes.
He said: “You want the young boys to challenge you for a place. They’re well up to speed so they’re good players.
“I was watching the reserves on Monday beating Celtic 3-0 and they were different class.
“It’s good to see the young boys progressing and coming through.”
McMann, 22, admits the priority for revamped Accies is securing top-flight safety but he’s convinced the bond that’s being cemented weekly can take them to greater heights.
He said: “The main target is staying in the league but we want to move up the table.
“We’ve got a lot of new players but over the last couple of weeks we’ve shown a real togetherness. I’m sure we’ll be fine.”
McMann insists beating St Johnstone today would be proof of their recent progress after a narrow loss to Celtic and Motherwell win.
He said: “The Betfred Cup results weren’t good enough but the last couple of weeks we’ve started to improve.
“We now face a good St Johnstone side off the back of two decent performances. But this is one we need to win.”
Accies have strengthened by bringing back former striker James Keatings from Dundee United and landing Hibs midfielder Scott Martin on a two-year deal.
Boss Martin Canning said: “Scott is an all-action, energetic midfielder. He’s a good fit for the club.”
