“But my reason for signing him was always a belief he can develop into a top-class player.

“Jack made one tackle in the game against Hungary I’m not sure many Scottish centre- halves c ould make because he was quick, he had the speed to get across the ground and his cover was brilliant.

“He needs coaching, developing and of course opportunit­y but at 6ft 3in he’s quick and can play. Jack did very well, as did Scott McKenna of BRENDAN RODGERS Aberdeen. There’s promise there for Scotland.

“Jack has come in from Dundee and settled very well. He has the qualities to play for Celtic and the internatio­nal team for the next 10 years or so.

“For a player making his first appearance away from home on the internatio­nal stage he was very composed. It looked as if he had played a lot more games than he has.

“He has a real belief in his ability. It’s not an arrogance or being overly-confident. He just knows he is a good player who has more to improve on.

“The great thing with Jack is he wants to learn and keep improving – and likewise for Kristoffer Ajer.”
