Jon: Cap would be No.1 reward

- GORDON PARKS

JON McLAUGHLIN insists nobody would be happier if he’s the last man standing for a Scotland call-up for the summer tour of South America.

The Hearts keeper is on new national boss Alex McLeish’s radar after a string of clean sheets since claiming the No.1 jersey with the Jambos.

Big Eck was at Tynecastle for a midweek draw with Kilmarnock and McLaughlin admits it was news to him as he focuses on tomorrow’s Scottish Cup clash at Motherwell.

He said: “I wasn’t aware he was watching.

“A few people have been saying that now the new man is in charge he has been coming to games and getting around to see people. So it’s good if you can play well in front of people like that.

“If you can impress them too then it’s even better.

“There’s an end-of-season trip to South America and I wouldn’t mind that.

“The missus probably wouldn’t be too happy if I’m getting to run off to Mexico and Peru but if no one else fancies it then I’ll definitely be up for it.”

The 30-year-old former Bradford goalie is aiming to book an appearance at the National Stadium and a place in the semi-finals with a win at Fir Park and he believes it would be a career highlight.

He said: “It would be a big reward for everyone.

“When I’ve been down in England I’ve had the opportunity to play at Wembley and it has been absolutely massive.

“I’m sure up here the chance to play competitive fixtures at Hampden would be amazing.

“For the fans too, the opportunity to play one of the big boys, if all the favourites get through, would be brilliant.”
