Lyon’s hip hip hurry to return for Accies

DARREN LYON is a man in a hurry after suffering like Andy Murray.

The Hamilton midfielder spent most of last season struggling with the same hip problem that has hampered the Scots tennis superstar.

Lyon, 22, has watched pals such as Greg Docherty make a racket in the first team.

And he has served his intention to join them after a first home game since May in Accies’ 2-2 draw with Aberdeen a fortnight ago.

He said: “The last year or so has been really frustrating because I had targeted the previous campaign as the one where I could make my breakthrough.

“However, I had this problem with my hip that refused to go away.

“I ended up needing two operations just to get that sorted. Hopefully that’s it over now.

“It’s similar to the injury that has kept Andy Murray out for a while and I had to visit a good few specialists before someone could get to the bottom of it.

“Thankfully it feels fine now because last season it would get really sore and stiffen up after training.

“Everything hurt – shooting, passing, running, turning, everything, even standing still. I felt like an old man.

“Now I have to make sure I do a lot of injury prevention exercises to try to avoid it happening again.

“It’s good to see your mates doing well but you wish you could be out there with them and making a name for yourself as well.

“Greg Docherty has been flying and he deserves all the plaudits he has received.”

Lyon insists Ibrox holds no fears today after riling Joey Barton and Co on the opening day last term.

He said: “The atmosphere was electric so I’m hoping it’ll be similar this weekend.

“I remember Ali Crawford nutmegging Barton and sticking one in the top corner – it took a while before he stopped going on about that.”
