Ruthless Hibees can’t eight-crash the top spot

- Andrew Southwick

NEW Hibs boss Kevin Milne watched his side rattle eight past Spartans in the Women’s Premier League – but they couldn’t close the gap at the top as leaders Glasgow City also went goal crazy.

Hibees stayed two points adrift after Milne’s first game in charge saw Rachel McLauchlan hit five and Lisa Robertson, Katey Turner and Abi Harrison also on target in the 8-0 home win. Pacesetters City racked up the same scoreline against bottom club Aberdeen at Petershill Park.

Jo Love and Noelle Murray both scored doubles for the champions with Hayley Lauder, Katie McCabe, Carla Boyce and Joanne Paton rounding off the rout.

It extended City’s run without conceding a goal in the league to 10 games and 14 domestic matches as they kept their noses in front in a thrilling title race with the top two having just four fixtures left.

Celtic moved four points clear in third place with a 4-1 win over Stirling University.

David Haley’s side blew the visitors away in the first half with Jamie-Leigh Napier and Cheryl McCulloch scoring either side of a Sarah Ewens double. However, Stirling were much improved after the break and Nicole Pullar netted a consolation.

At New Tinto Park Hamilton all but secured Premier League survival as they moved seven points clear of Aberdeen with three games to go.

Lori Gardner’s header deflected off a defender to give Accies a 1-0 half-time lead against Rangers.

They had to withstand heavy pressure in the second 45 minutes but Kodie Hay’s strike clinched a 2-0 victory for their first away success of the season.

It means a draw on Sunday away to Aberdeen will be enough to relegate the Dons.
