KEV LEAVES ‘EM RED AND BURIED

Relief for Salford as Brown steers team to first win

- GARETH WALKER

KEVIN BROWN provided a calm head among the chaos as Salford recorded their first Super League win of the season.

Two sides desperate to get off the mark produced an often frantic clash with basic errors. The promoted Centurions were fully in the contest past the hour as they mounted a concerted attack trailing by just four points.

But a moment of magic from Krisnan Inu turned the game, as he twice juggled an intercept before flicking the ball to Ken Sio, who raced 90 metres to touch down.

When Brown, 36, scored his second try of the half moments later the relief among the Red Devils players was clear. Two more tries gave the scoreline a flattering look but boss Richard Marshall wasn’t complaining.

“We needed to put a performance together, compete and come through the other side and we ticked all those boxes today,” said Marshall. “Lee Mossop played more minutes than he has for a long time because we needed his leadership, and I could hear Krisnan Inu talking and organising for us. Kev Brown was fantastic.”

The Centurions had led at the break as centre Iain Thornley scored one try and made another for Matty Russell, with Brown sending

James Greenwood over in response. Brown dummied over to put his side in front soon after the restart, but it was still only 12-8 when Inu produced his touch of class to send Sio away.

It sparked a late scoring flurry that saw Brown, Chris Atkin and Harvey Livett touch down, leaving Centurions boss John Duffy deflated.

He said: “It’s so frustrating. It was a great first half for us, we just didn’t compete in the second like we wanted to.

“We were still in the game when they made that long break and then our heads go.”
