Chilling CCTV of teen in Megan attack
A TEENAGER is caught on CCTV staring at his bloodied hand after raping and murdering a school pal.
Joseph Trevor, 19, attacked Megan Newton after she let him stay at her flat.
He had told her he felt too high on drink and drugs to return to his family home after a night out.
Footage shows Megan, 18, giggling as she gets to her door with him at 3.44am. Then at 5.53am, Trevor is seen walking out and hurling her keys on the ground.
His right hand has blood on it and he appears to stare at it as he makes his way calmly down the street.
Staffordshire Police released the chilling footage after Trevor – whose father is a policeman – was jailed for life with a minimum of 21 years.
Judge Michael Chambers QC said Megan, who was a football coach, paid with her life for her “act of kindness”.
And prosecutor Adrian Keeling QC said the footage proved that A-level student Trevor was “remarkably composed” as he left the murder scene.
Megan had worked an evening shift at a fish and chip shop before leaving her bedsit flat in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, shortly before 11pm on April 19 last year.
She and Trevor, who knew each other from school, both partied at the Kiln nightclub in Newcastleunder-Lyme.
Trevor was arrested for having a bag of the drug ketamine – but police freed him in the early hours.
He and Megan then met by chance at a taxi rank, where they were filmed getting a taxi together. Stafford crown court heard that after raping Megan and stabbing her to death, Trevor walked to a nearby bridge with the suspected intention of killing himself. But he then returned home, where he was arrested. Staffordshire Police referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct over the decision to release Trevor, from Trentham, after his drugs arrest. The IOPC said: “After careful assessment we decided no investigation was required.”
