FOWLER ON... THE TITLE RACE

This could be the closest battle in years and as City show fragility, Liverpool are finding belief

ROBBIE FOWLER reckons this could be the closest title race for years.

The former Liverpool striker couldn’t see past Manchester City at the start of the season but now believes Liverpool can push them all the way.

“If you’d asked me even a few weeks ago I’d have said that City were still massive favourites,” Fowler said.

“But I think we’ve seen just a hint of weakness recently. Against Chelsea, against Hoffenheim, and even against Everton, they looked a little more human.

“They have a fantastic squad, quite possibly the strongest in Europe, and they have a fantastic team, with incredible back-up.

“But some of their fringe players seem to be lacking in confidence, lacking an edge. That is natural for a team when players who haven’t had much action come in, but it’s unusual for City.”

Not that Fowler is saying Liverpool will win the title, but he does think they will keep the pressure on Pep Guardiola (below) and his men. “City’s first XI is still incredible and, if they are all fit and available, they will be difficult to stop,” he added. “But Liverpool now have belief, and they have impressive strength in depth too.

“If they can get through Christmas still up there, then it will be a real title race... and exciting because we’ve not had one for years.”
