28 YEARS AGO (1989) Our front page told how US President George W Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev held a joint-press conference in Malta, heralding the end of the Cold War. 56 YEARS AGO (1961) The contraceptive pill became available on the NHS, but only to married women. Finally, in 1967, it was offered to all women who wanted it. 41 YEARS AGO (1976) Classical composer Benjamin Britten died of heart failure, aged 63. He was buried in Aldeburgh Parish Church in Suffolk.
