Square in the mood.. with tidings of cold comfort & no joy

-

The people who choose the background music on soap operas are rarely given the credit they deserve.

So I’d like to say a heartfelt “Get in!” to whoever put on It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas at the start of last night’s EastEnders.

It certainly is beginning to look a lot like a traditional Walford Christmas. Bloody miserable.

Martin Fowler got the party started in the right way, reciting his lines from the am-dram club’s festive offering: “Christmas is a time when families open up to each other, fellow passengers to the grave.” Then we quickly cut to an increasingly hairy Phil Mitchell – honestly, he’s now only a couple of horns short of the full Gruffalo – coughing up his liver in bed and gruffly demanding to be left alone on the big day.

The Festive Fun Fairy then swept us off Meet some of the most amazing fake animals in the world.

These animatronic creatures are fitted with eye cameras that allow them to film their real-life species.

From January, actor David Tennant voices one of the most innovative natural history series seen on our screens.

Following on from penguin hit Spy in the Huddle, more than 30 ultra-realistic critters will go undercover for BBC1 series Spy in the Wild. The results are astonishing... to the Queen Vic where Linda Carter was moping around in her dressing gown sharing season’s bleatings about her absent family.

After that there was just enough time to pop in on Jack Branning and Ronnie Mitchell who were reeling from a devastating double blow – the people buying their house and their wedding band had pulled out overnight.

This left Ronnie facing up to the very real possibility of having to book an Elton John tribute act who – get this – only plays Elton John songs.

Little wonder Ronnie let out a familiar cry of seasonal anguish: “I just wish we could press pause on Christmas!” Probably a bit late for that, Ron. I am quite tempted to seek out the hour-long EastEnders Christmas Day special on my Sky Planner though.

And press delete.
