Good luck to Mason.. but Rodgers is the man for Spurs

-

WHO would have thought, before a ball was kicked this season, that Ryan Mason would be leading Tottenham out at Wembley?

Good luck to Mason – I still shudder when I think of the incident at Chelsea which left him with a fractured skull and forced him to retire at the age of 26, and I am delighted that he has the honour of managing Spurs against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.

But I have to say City are favourites. Manager Pep Guardiola doesn’t often lose two weekends in a row, let alone two weekends in a row at Wembley.

And I also don’t see Mason landing the Tottenham job on a permanent basis.

If I were in chairman Daniel Levy’s shoes, I would go for Brendan Rodgers this summer. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not trying to hustle Rodgers out of the door at the

King Power, where he is in a strong position to finish in the top four and lead Leicester back into the Champions League as well as the FA Cup final next month. And I can understand anyone asking why he would want to leave Leicester when they are going to finish above Spurs for the second year running and he will be in the Champions League next season. But if stylish football, with an accent on exciting young players, a modern coaching pedigree, and experience of managing a big club, are all job specifications, then former Liverpool boss Rodgers fits the bill perfectly.

Levy may yet choose to go down the continental route, with the names of Julian Nagelsmann (left) and Maurizio Sarri in the frame, but why shop abroad when the best candidate is only 100 miles up the M1?
