Arch enemies

THERE WILL BE NO LOVE LOST BETWEEN PACEMEN JOFRA AND KEMAR THIS SUMMER

- BY MIKE WALTERS @Mikewaltersmgm

KEMAR ROACH has warned there will be “no friendships” between the West Indies and Jofra Archer this summer.

And Roach, who blew England away in last year’s Test series in the Caribbean, says he can’t wait to “get stuck into” Joe Root’s batting line-up again.

Barbados-born Archer, hero of the World Cup final super-over drama 11 months ago, played three times for the Windies’ Under-19 side before pledging his allegiance to England.

Next month’s first Test at the Ageas Bowl will be the first time he has faced his homeland federation in five-day cricket – although he was on the winning side when

England won by eight wickets at the same venue in the World Cup a year ago.

And Roach, leader of

West Indies’ pace artillery now in quarantine at Old Trafford, warned: “Jofra has made his decision and is doing a fantastic job for his career. There are no friendships with this series.

“When we come up against Jofra, we will devise a fantastic plan to counter it. I’m looking forward to that battle.

“I saw him play as a youngster in domestic cricket in Barbados, I always knew he was talented and obviously it has shown over the years.

“He came over here, he’s done a fantastic job and I wish him all the best for his career – but now it’s all about winning and playing hard cricket.”

Asked if Archer (above) could expect extra chirp on the field in the forthcoming three-match series, Roach smiled: “We will see when that comes around. We will definitely see.”

Archer has hit 96.1mph on the speed gun for England, but he won’t be the only fast show in town when West Indies defend the Wisden Trophy.

Roach (above, left), 31, took 18 wickets in three Tests when they claimed their first series win against England in a decade last year.

His haul included a devastating spell of 5-17 at Bridgetown as England were skittled for just 77 in the first Test rout – and Root’s men went on to lose 2-1.

England’s top order never recovered and Roach added: “It’s always tough to play England, but once we get stuck into them I think we stand a great chance.

“Our plan was always to make it tough for the English batsmen. I don’t see any reason why we can’t execute that here and cause more trouble.”

The tourists have been under lockdown at Old Trafford – confined to the on-site hotel and net practice – since they flew in a week ago.

Normally Windies players would enjoy the social aspects of touring and head coach Phil Simmons admitted: “The biggest challenge is boredom.

“We have to make sure the down time is entertaining. There’s always dominoes – if you’ve been to the Caribbean, that is highly explosive entertainment.”
