ONE man’s epic collection of retro 1980s toys has been sold for £220,000.

Cornel Fleming, who died in January, amassed more than 1,600 action figures and cars for franchises like Star Wars, He-man and Transformers.

The market for nostalgic toys is booming, which is reflected in the prices some of Dr Fleming’s toys achieved.

An unopened pack of three Masters of the Universe figures, made by Mattel and featuring He-man, Teela and Ram Man, sold for an incredible £12,000. They are all pristine condition after being kept in their sealed boxes.

Another model of He-man and his spaceship Wind Raider sold for £4,800.

Away from the superhero franchise, a lot containing Bumblebee, Huffer and Cliffjumper from Transformers sold for £4,080. The Hasbro toys, made in 1984, had been expected to fetch just £80. Romanian-born Dr Fleming worked as a GP in London.

He and his Jewish family survived the Holocaust because his mother was the friend of a Romanian princess who posted a sentry at the door of their home in Czernowitz.

He died, aged 82, and the collection was sold in accordance with his wishes. A family spokesman said: “It was always known that when he passed his collection would be shared with the world. The idea of this was something he had always liked.”

A 1936 Meccano set, found wrapped in Christmas paper in the loft of a house in Knowle, West Mids, has sold for £250 at auction. The bolt-together engineering toy was created in 1908 by English inventor, businessman and politician Frank Hornby, who also founded Hornby Model Railways and Dinky Toys
