GOALS WILL COME SAYS KIWI CHRIS

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

CHRIS WOOD claims his Kiwi stoicism means he’s not worried about a barren start to the season.

Wood has failed to score in five games for Burnley, while in-form strike partner Ashley Barnes has already banged in four.

Wood says Kiwis are taught to stay calm and pointed to New Zealand cricket captain Kane Williamson’s (below) gracious reaction to their heartbreaking loss to England in the World Cup Final. “It might just be how we’re brought up as Kiwis,” said the striker. “I thought Kane Williamson was very humble and very accepting of the manner of that defeat.

“It’s what I like to see as a Kiwi, other Kiwis behaving with grace like that. I think it might be in the DNA. It’s how you’re brought up.

“I’m not worried because I know the goals will come. We’re playing well as a team and we’re playing well as a front pair.

“The chances are dropping to Barnesy and he’s putting them away fantastically. That’s brilliant for us as a team. As long as we continue to work hard then the goals will come for everyone.”

Wood, 27, says he will soon start scoring again because he netted 55 goals in his previous three campaigns with Burnley and Leeds.

“That definitely helps,” he said. “As long as the team are creating chances, the goals will come.”

Wood and Barnes return to Brighton today, where the pair were part of Gus Poyet’s 2011 League One title-winning.

“We had dreams of playing in the Premier League at Brighton and it’s nice we’ve achieved that,” he said.

“I really enjoyed myself down there, it was a great city. Gus was a great manager and I really enjoyed working under him.”
