Katya says he looks like he needs the toilet. “I’m concentrating so hard on the dance I get to a point, maybe after a minute, when I haven’t exhaled,” he says. “That’s when she says I have a constipation face.”
Head judge Shirley Ballas even said she didn’t like his hair. But Seann, who is nicknamed Aslan by his Bake Off host mate Noel Fielding, loves his “dishevelled lion” look.
“No one’s cutting my hair,” he says. “When I was 15 I went to a barber and tried to get a short haircut. The bloke did a really bad job of it and at the end said, ‘Sorry, mate – I just can’t do anything with your hair’.
“He blamed my hair! All my mates were in the barbers at the same time and laughed. And at that age you’re really self-conscious.
“The next time I got my hair cut I went to a hair salon in Brighton and I really liked it. So I’ve had the same hairdresser since I was 16. I travel from London to Brighton and I won’t let anyone else touch my hair. Even though I’ve been mistaken for a woman and a homeless person.”
The curl in Seann’s hair is natural – but is the blond? “Well no, I do, er, have highlights. The reason is to brighten myself up a bit because I have a very moody resting bitch face. Blond maybe makes me look a bit softer.”
He is possessive about his locks but far less possessive about hair elsewhere. “I will let Strictly wax my chest,” he says. “In fact, I want Katya to do it. It can be payback for all the injuries I’ve given her.”
Seann admits he wasn’t prepared for the physical rigours of Strictly.
“I was sweating so much I thought I’d have to go to the doctor. The first time we rehearsed, we stopped 10 minutes in and I was absolutely drenched with sweat. I thought I was being taught the dance. In fact it was just the warm-up.”
But his years on the stand-up comedy circuit have given him the thick skin needed to cope with the judges’ barbs.
