I’LL CARRY ON.. FOR A FEW MORE TEARS

Crying legend Federer says his fairy tale is far from over

TEARFUL Roger Federer declared his “fairy tale” goes on after he clinched his 20th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

The Swiss superstar had to fight off nerves and a brave comeback from Marin Cilic in a five-set battle to win his sixth title in Melbourne.

Federer, who turns 37 in August, has now won three Grand Slams in the last 12 months after a five-year barren spell. He becomes only the second man – after Ken Rosewall – to win three after the age of 35 in the Open era.

And the greatest male player of all time fought back the tears in his postmatch victory speech.

“I’m so happy, it’s unbelievable,” Federer said. “I’m happy it’s over, but winning is just an absolute dream come true. The fairy tale continues for me.

“After the great year I had last year, it’s incredible. It’s definitely a very special moment in my life again.”

Asked later to explain his emotional response, he said: “I felt like the finals came very quickly because of not dropping any sets and stuff, still having so many emotions left.

“I needed to probably work through these emotions this way. That’s what made me nervous.

“The semi was cut short. I didn’t fall asleep very well after the Chung Hyeon match. I think it surprised me that at this stage of a competition in semis, to get a walkover, that was very odd for me.

“I couldn’t fall asleep until about 3am. At the same time I’m happy I can show emotions and share it with the people.”

New world No.3 Cilic, who had four break points in Federer’s opening game of the final set, put up a better fight than their onesided Wimbledon final.

But the Croat was not pleased the final was played with the roof closed. “Throughout the tournament I played all my matches outdoors, also preparing for a hot day, 38 degrees,” he said.

“Then first match for the final to play with the roof closed, it’s difficult.’

Federer had “no idea” how long he will continue his remarkable career. “I’ve won three Slams now in 12 months – I can’t believe it myself,” he added.

“I have to keep a good schedule, stay hungry, then maybe good things can happen.

“I don’t think age is an issue. It’s just a number. Exciting times ahead.”
