Student is punched for being from South

- By Jim Norton

AN 18-year-old student was punched unconscious in a branch of McDonald’s in Salford when a local man discovered she had a Southern accent.

Megan Westlotorn said the man approached her and asked where she was from while she waited to collect her order of chicken nuggets in the early hours of last Sunday.

But when she told him, the Londoner claimed the man suddenly began abusing her. Thinking the ordeal was over when she walked away, she was shocked when he followed and punched her in the face.

Miss Westlotorn – a first year sports science student at Salford University – is now urging other students to watch out for the attacker: ‘I just want other people to be vigilant’.

She added: ‘I noticed him talking to people. As soon as he asked where I was from and I said I was from London, he just switched. He started swearing at me and giving me abuse. He called me a f****** southerner, saying he hated Londoners.’ She tried to escape him. ‘The next thing I knew, I was on the floor in a pool of blood,’ she said. ‘He must have knocked me unconscious for a minute or so. There was blood pouring from my nose. I was just really shocked. I didn’t know what had happened.’

Miss Westlotorn described her attacker as white, around 5ft 4ins, with a Salford accent.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed officers were called to the scene of the attack: ‘An investigation is under way and police are now appealing for information.’
