Jackett feeling a chill wind

SHEFF WED 4 WOLVES 1

KENNY JACKETT said he was ‘in the firing line’ as Wolves boss after crashing to another defeat. Sheffield Wednesday’s biggest league win of the season took them to within a point of the top six.

Wolves are careering in the opposite direction, having won only one of their last eight games. And this defeat followed a 3-2 home upset by Leeds.

Jackett said: ‘We defended poorly again and have just lost two games, conceding seven goals. We are not in the position we want to be. I can accept being in the firing line — it is a worrying slump.’

Wolves led through Benik Afobe’s penalty but were behind 10 minutes later as fernando forestieri scored twice, once from the spot. Daniel Pudil, from 20 yards, and Gary Hooper slso scored and Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal said: ‘We were fantastic.’

READING 1 BLACKBURN 0

BRIAN McDERMOTT’S second spell as Reading manager got off to the best possible start as Danny Williams hit a stunning volley to seal victory over Blackburn. Williams struck after 11 minutes when he ran from deep on to Hal Robson-Kanu’s header and thundered in an angled effort from the edge of the box. ‘It was a fantastic goal,’ said McDermott, who left the club in March 2013 before replacing Steve Clarke last week. ‘When you make a run like that and smash it in the top corner, that’s some strike.’ McDermott’s return was made even sweeter before the game by a fan in the car park. ‘I got a really nice welcome when someone gave me some chocolate,’ he added. ‘That was lovely.’
