VERSE APPEAL TO OVERTURN LEGER
The controversial duel for the 2015 Ladbrokes St Leger reconvenes this morning when the British horseracing Authority hear the appeal by connections of Simple Verse against the decision to demote the filly from first place at Doncaster.
The Ralph Beckett-trained filly, partnered by Andrea Atzeni, passed the post a head in front of Bondi Beach and rider Colm O’Donoghue after the two horses bumped twice in a rousing finish.
however, after a dramatic stewards’ inquiry, televised live by Channel 4, it was decided that Simple Verse was to blame and the placings were reversed, much to the chagrin of the filly’s connections, who will be represented by Graeme McPherson QC at today’s hearing.
Bondi Beach trainer Aidan O’Brien and O’Donoghue, who received plenty of plaudits for his efforts in the inquiry, will be present and will be supported by John Kelsey-Fry QC. Meanwhile, O’Brien seems intent on trying to equal Vincent O’Brien’s record of 15 wins in Sunday’s Juddmonte Beresford Stakes, as he is responsible for 11 of the 17 confirmations for the Group Two at The Curragh.
however, one horse that won’t be appearing in the next fortnight is King George VI And Queen elizabeth Stakes winner Postponed.
New trainer Roger Varian has ruled him out of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday week.
