This Gran’s speechless with joy
AT THE most thrilling moments most of us tend to reach for clichés — so I never disparage any sportsman who is ‘over the moon’ or smile at an actress who tearfully describes her ‘incredible journey’.
‘Words fail me’ people say — because when there are no fresh words of our own, we fall back on well-worn expressions simply because they’ll do.
So here we go: for me it was a dream come true. And I was high as a kite.
The scene was our sitting room. Two young women were sitting side by side, each with a baby on her lap. One was my daughter Kitty — whose wedding saga (written by us both) appeared in Femail magazine two years ago, to the entertainment of other mums and daughters who went through similar ups and downs.
What Kitty did next was to have a perfect, tiny baby daughter (in scary, dramatic circumstances, but that’s another story) on September 19. If I told you I’d been worried I’d be seriously understating the case. After six days in hospital her first stop before going home was our house.
Next to Kitty sat my wonderful daughter-in-law Aimee, her four-month-old boy surveying the room in his fascinated way. Needless to say the cousins didn’t take much notice of each other! But they will.
And this Granny (or Nana, or whatever they call me) will be more than ready to babysit, play games and read stories — and probably write some, too. It all (God willing) lies ahead — that next great stage of life when you step forward a generation.
Watching the two blonde mums chatting, I thought how amazing it is that after hankering after grandchildren for quite a while, I should be blessed twice in four months. I’ll never forget 2012 — the year of the Diamond Jubilee, the thrilling Olympics and Paralympics, and of grandmotherhood.
So there I sat, beaming at the two beautiful grandchildren under this roof at last and — do you know something? Your columnist who can talk the hind leg off a donkey was utterly speechless.
