Mish-ion not impossible

- By The Scout (Chris Goulding)

MISHRIFF has everything in his favour to slay Baaeed, the highest-rated horse in the world, and make it back-to-back victories in today’s Juddmonte International atYork.

Since taking last year’s contest, Mishriff (3.35, nb, ITV) has failed to get his head in front. But he was unfortunate not to have won the CoralEclipse at Sandown where he finished like a rocket to take second place behind Vadeni after being denied a clear run, with Native Trail back in third.

As for Mishriff’s recent performance over 12 furlongs in the King GeorgeVI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, he clearly failed to stay, just like he did in the race last year.

Today’s 10 furlongs is his perfect trip, but this will be unknown territory for Baaeed, winner of all his nine races over a mile.

Admittedly, most of Baaeed’s performances so far have been breathtaking, suggesting that he will get the trip.

But his recent achievements have been against moderate opposition.

He offers absolutely no value at 4-9, unlike Mishriff who is a cracking bet at 4-1.

In the opener,York specialists Dakota Gold and COPPER KNIGHT (1.50, ITV), both six-time winners at the track, go head-to-head.

There is little between them but the expected good to firm ground will favour Copper Knight, the winner of the race last year, and his trainer Tim Easterby is very confident.

The well-bred CHALDEAN (2.25, treble, ITV), who beat a smart field at Newbury – the second, third and fourth won their next starts – cannot be opposed in the Acomb Stakes.

The step-up in trip has seen AIKHAL (3.00, nap, ITV) show his true colours.

He impressed when winning over 10 furlongs at the Curragh and today’s extra two furlongs will see further improvement.

After some very decent performances in Group races, THUNDEROUS (4.10, ITV) will appreciate today’s drop to handicap company.
